Volkswagen introduced the successor of the R32 at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Golf R is the most powerful Golf ever produced by the German automaker.
Motivated by a 270-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine that generates 258 lb-ft of torque, this hot hatch sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. Peak torque is available from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. Power is sent to all four wheels through the brand’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. Volkswagen is sticking with the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) which helps the car achieve a fuel economy rating of 28 mpg (8.4 L/100 km). The 6-speed manual transmission is barely thirstier at 8.5 L/100 km. So, while the new Golf R is more potent than the outgoing R32, it’s also 21-percent more fuel-efficient. Aesthetically, the car shares striking similarities with the Scirocco coupe. Visual presence is delivered by the redesigned front fascia, unique side skirts, LED daytime running lights, "Talladega" alloy wheels, 25-mm lower ride height and center-mounted dual tailpipes. The interior boasts numerous upgrades, including a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel as well as aluminum pedals and door sills. The sports seats pay tribute to the Kyalami racetrack with their uniquely-designed middle section. Of course, you’ll never forget that you’re sitting in a Golf R with all the little "R" badges throughout the cabin. European pricing has yet to be confirmed, but Volkswagen is reportedly planning to sell the Golf R in North America, too.
